Improving Student Learning
through Research, Professional Development, and Support
 for Teachers and Principals

Randy Ludeman, I.F.

Each year new staff members participate in an induction process that begins with two days of workshops with the Instructional Facilitator.  Initiatives going on in the district are shared, explained, and discussed.  Expectations of the district are handed out in a notebook that is filled with procedures, assessments, ideas, and required forms. General information about the district is also provided by the business manager, the tech coordinator, the curriculum director, and other central office employees.

Three Core Principles of Coaching

Choice:  Instructional coaches respect teachers’ professionalism and ability to make decisions.  They demonstrate this respect by offering teachers a wide range of options and by encouraging teachers to tailor interventions for their classrooms and students.

“Destiny is a matter of choice, not chance.”

Dialogue:  Instructional coaches and teachers spend a great deal of their time talking about learning and teaching.  They share ideas, identify problems, create solutions, and plan together through a free-flow of ideas.
Knowledge in action:  Instructional coached assume that knowledge is learned quickest when it is learned on the job.  Instructional coaches and teacher are engaged in a mutually creative act, and part of the attraction of working with the coach for teachers is the simple joy that comes from any creative endeavor.
